Introduction

In the following analysis, I will compare the classic novels Captain John Smith by C. H. Forbes-Lindsay and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Captain John Smith is a fictional text that explores the life of historical figure John Smith. The novel reconstructs the adventures that John Smith encountered when first exploring the New World. Dissimilarly, Pride and Prejudice follows the fictional tale of a single young woman, Elizabeth Bennet, on her journey to marry her love, Mr. Darcy. Although both books are fictional accounts of a single main character, their themes are very different. Captain John Smith is an adventure story with a strong male lead, while Pride and Prejudice is a love story with a strong female main character.

In the following research paper, I will compare the two novels according to feminine and masculine pronouns, end sentence punctuation, and comparison of the five most frequently occurring words of significance. Pronoun and common word analysis will give insight into the masculine or feminine focus of the novel. Additionally, analysis of end sentence punctuation will surmise an exclamatory or expository theme to the writing. I hypothesize that the novels will be starkly different according to these three analyses.
